Morris Rental Housing Commission

Meeting Minutes January 28, 2010

Council Chambers. 4:00 p.m.

Present: Steve Rudney, Henry Fulda, Melanie Fohl, Nora Jost, and Carol Wilcox.

Absent: Dan Johnson, Cheryl Brevig, Hilda Parks, Blaine Hill, Melissa Sherod, Bill Storck and John Amundson.

The meeting was brief and informational since there was not a quorum.

Educational Needs
Melanie informed the committee that she has spoken with the HR director at Riverview and forwarded some materials that have been translated. They have their own system of support in place for those seeking rental housing and didn't feel a need for anything further. Melanie left the door open for help in the future if there was a need.

Dan Johnson has offered again to contact Jim Greenwaldt about meeting with the class at the high school again.

Melanie will contact MN Housing about a workshop for landlords again in February. Topics that seem to be needed include Fair Housing issues. Henry offered to discuss his role in alleviating problems with “party houses". Jim Beauregard will also be invited to explain police procedures.

The group also talked again about a meeting with landlords and tenants together and decided that wasn't that best mode of education.

Contracts for Deed
There have been more of these in the recent past. The group felt that the City Attorney should be asked to look into whether these are legitimate contracts or just shams meant to by-pass the rental licensing ordinance.

New Members
John Amundson's term has expired and we will be looking for another replacement. He is willing to return if we do not find a willing member. The group recommended Nathan Hoffman. Melanie will contact him.

Meeting Times/Dates
Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 25th, 4 PM in Council Chambers.
